The Academic Activities Department at ELSA strives to ensure that participants in AA events acquire and improve their practical legal knowledge and skills. On the International and National level members can get involved in initiatives such as the ELSA Negotiation Competitions, ELSA Law Review and Essay Competitions. Moreover, each year the ELSA Network organises an Annual Human Rights Campaign during which we celebrate ELSA Day to raise awareness on a selected human rights issue. This year’s ELSA Day topic is ‘Privacy in the Digital Age’. At ELSA KCL we aim to achieve the AA goals by organising interactive webinars, workshops and competitions. We want our members to truly get involved in the events to hone their legal skills that may prove invaluable in the future.

Academic Activities

ELSA KCL’s Seminars & Conferences Department strives to organise events on some of the most intellectually stimulating legal topics. With speakers from all over the world, individuals placed in key positions, our members get first-hand access to invaluable resources and opportunities. Our events focus on equipping the young generation with the necessary tools to effect positive change, as well as offering the necessary information to those that want to pursue legal careers in an international context and not only.

STEP is ELSA’s oldest Flagship Project. It provides law students and future lawyers with legal work experience in the form of STEP Traineeships, which are offered by providers active in different jurisdictions and legal sectors. Traineeships may be offered at any organisation active in the legal sector such as law firms, non-governmental organisations, intergovernmental organisations, legal clinics, courts, consultancy firms, publishing houses, research institutes, law faculties, and so on; hence, the format of the traineeship varies depending on the Traineeship provider. KCL ELSA provides feedback on students’ applications so that they can be amended a second time before submission. Apply for this programme which offers a cross-cutting picture of the true diversity of the legal profession.

STEP

Here at ELSA, we have a range of moot court competitions planned for the academic year ahead to help equip all law, and non-law students, with optimal advocacy skills. From public international law to human rights law, you will have a chance to leverage your legal research skills while navigating different practice areas as well as get exclusive opportunities to develop your public-speaking competence in both intra-KCL and intervarsity mooting competitions with ELSA candidates from other universities. Beyond competitions, you will also have access to a number of skill-building workshops so you could best build upon your confidence before going on to deliver effective advocacy against novice and seasoned mooters from across the UK!

ELSA provides a variety of events, from seminars and workshops on European legal issues to visits and internships. There are many opportunities for students to interact with law students and young lawyers from all around Europe, put their legal knowledge into practice, learn about foreign legal systems, experience professional business environments, participate in cultural exchanges, and develop management, leadership and teamwork skills.
