The European Law Students’ Association is an international, independent, non-political, non-profit making organisation run by and for students and recent graduates, who are interested in achieving academic and personal excellence in addition to their legal or law-related studies at university.
Five law students from Austria, Hungary, Poland and West Germany founded ELSA in 1981. Today, ELSA is the world’s largest independent law students association and it is represented at nearly 300 law faculties in 43 countries across Europe with membership in excess of 40 000 students and young lawyers. ELSA provides opportunities for international exchange, diversified legal education and personal professional development for law students and young lawyers.
ELSA aims at providing its members with a platform to develop their existing skills and acquire new ones, to interact with fellow students and experienced practitioners from different states and legal systems around Europe, and to be equipped for a professional life in an international environment, through mutual understanding, intercultural cooperation and the large variety of activities and projects the Association offers.
ELSA activities comprise a large variety of academic and professional events and projects that are organised to fulfil the vision of ELSA and in order to provide our members with opportunities to enhance their skills and to interact with each other. Furthermore, ELSA provides law students opportunities to develop their skills through our traineeship programme as well as through our publications. Finally working in the ELSA Network prepares active members of ELSA for their professional life through international experience gained through the association.
On August 4th, the President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, Lady Hale, became the patron of ELSA United Kingdom. We are incredibly excited about this development and look forward to the opportunities it may bring!
